It depends on the need. For low levels of hexavalent chromium in plating waste streams and chromate rinses, Kolene® 6-2-3 Reducing Agent™ is a single-step powder that works at alkaline pH. To clean and brighten metals, including as a post-treatment after heat treatment or to remove heat tint from stainless, Kolene KGC™ and KLC™ solutions selectively remove light oxide film and scale. For salt bath sludge, the Kolene SMS™ system dissolves the sludge, adjusts pH, and precipitates heavy metals. Product characteristics include: - performs at alkaline pH levels – no need for bidirectional pH adjustment - effective on plating waste streams and chromate rinses - granular additions by manual or automatic feed - Kolene-designed equipment can optimize chemistry performance Please contact us to arrange for a bench-scale test of your waste stream sample at our R&D facility in Detroit, Michigan. ## Metal cleaning and brightening: Kolene KGC and KLC solutions Kolene KGC and KLC solutions clean and brighten a broad range of metals and alloys, including aluminum, copper, brasses, bronzes, stainless steels, precious and semi-precious metals, “exotic” alloys, and inlaid/clad multi-metals. Benefits include: - selectively remove light oxide film and scale - practical alternatives to mineral acids - ability to remove light soils and oil films concurrently with surface scale/oxides - elimination of multiple cleaning stages - ideal post-treatments for heat treatment operations to provide luster or brightness - remove heat tint and yellowing from stainless steels ## Salt bath by-product management: Kolene SMS Kolene SMS is our system for managing the reaction by-products that form in our cleaning salt baths. It dissolves solidified alkaline sludge removed during routine bath maintenance. Once the sludge is in water solution, the pH and ORP are measured. If necessary, reducing agents such as Kolene 6-2-3 Reducing Agent may be added to reduce oxidizing species such as hexavalent chromium. The pH is then adjusted to a slightly alkaline value to maximize metallic oxide precipitation. Kolene SMS adjusts pH, precipitates heavy metals, and may reduce sludge volume. Systems are engineered for the application.
